Un Coup de Dés, directed by Yvan Attal, stars Guillaume Canet as Mathieu, whose life is turned upside down when he discovers the infidelity of his friend Vincent, played by Attal himself. Alongside Maïwenn, they navigate a drama full of lies and secrets on the Côte d'Azur. A film to (re)discover on DVD, BR and VOD from May 29, 2024.
And the filmmaker is both in front of and behind the camera, accompanied by Maïwenn, Guillaume Canet and Marie-Josée Croze. The four actors portray two inseparable couples, under severe strain.
Mathieu owes everything to his friend Vincent: his house, his job, even saving his life ten years ago. Together with their girlfriends, they form an inseparable foursome, and live an unclouded life on the Côte d'Azur. But Mathieu's loyalty is put to the test when he discovers that Vincent is cheating on his wife. When Vincent's mistress is found dead, suspicion takes hold of both couples, along with its trail of cowardice, lies and guilt...
Our verdict
For the first time, Yvan Attal has turned his attention to thrillers and detective stories in his new feature film, whose style stands in stark contrast to his previous films. In Un Coup de Dés, the filmmaker focuses on two upper-middle-class couples, whose lifestyle and occupations are such that it's sometimes difficult to identify with the characters. Nonetheless, it's a good Sunday-night thriller that will undoubtedly appeal to members of the age bracket represented by the film - forties and fifties with a penchant for devious scenarios.
Nevertheless, the film, while effective, suffers from several formal problems, not least the voice-over, which weighs down the process and seems excessive. If you liked Visions, Yann Gozlan's last film, you're sure to enjoy Un Coup de Dés, which resembles it in several respects, starting with its location in the South of France and the Côte d'Azur.
