Here's an exhibition that should awaken the child in all of us. Hangar Y invites all generations to this strange toy store, for an exhibition that's both fun and educational, exploring games past and present, and their impact on society.
From May 18 to September 22, 2024, stroll through Rayon Jouets, the exhibition that blends contemporary art and history, in an ultra-playful immersive scenography.
Play is part of culture: toys and playful practices reflect the beliefs, habits and mores of an era and a country. Play is also a way of forging links and learning key elements of life in society. This exhibition highlights the links between toy objects and the social and cultural systems behind them.
Here, you can admire and interact with 50 works by contemporary artists, and over 80 antique toys, some dating back to the 2nd millennium BC! Carts and rattles, goose games, dolls and figurines, model trains, building bricks, masquerade costume: these toys have evolved through the ages. The learning process, the standards shown and the skills required are not the same: we also see thechild 's place change and grow through the objects that symbolize them. In our modern eyes, some old toys may surprise or even shock, just as current play practices would have had no place in other centuries, in other countries.
The dialogue established between ancient and modern, between us and the works, opens up an interesting reflection on our societies, our beliefs, and what we project onto our children.
To appeal to the youngest visitors (in spirit or age), Hangar Y set out to create a scenography as playful as the works themselves. The exhibition space is transformed into a giant, colorful and interactive toy store. Life-size installations, toys hanging from the ceiling, sounds: you'll find yourself following the exhibition trail like a child, eagerly awaiting to see the wonders hidden in each room.
Contemporary artists also contribute to this playful aspect: paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, video games... That's right: some works are interactive and dynamic, to give the public a more immersive and unusual experience.
To complete the tour, a large play area has been set up in the Nave of Hangar Y: a giant, colorful construction set plunges us into this playful, childlike world as soon as we enter.
