At101 avenue de Choisy in the 13th arrondissement, Fu Pâtisserie, café and brunch, has set up shop to treat us. And that's no bad thing for us, since we have to admit that in this favorite Chinatown, typical restaurants and bubble teas abound, but not necessarily coffee shops serving good cakes accompanied by gourmet lattes and specialty coffees. We owe this new haunt to Christine Fu (hence the name of the place), who has been delighting us with her made-to-order pastries and gourmet creations for some time now.
As we said, Fu is much more than just a pastry shop, it's also a coffee shop-tea room with a beautiful, uncluttered dining area. Faithful to the neighborhood, this spot offers coffee shop basics spiced up with exotic flavors.
You'll find fine specialty coffees sourced from Mokxa, a roaster based in Strasbourg and Lyon, and Hanoi Coner. You'll love Fu's lattes with pandan (the famous aromatic herb with hints of almond, prepared fresh here), sesame, matcha or chai. Enjoy hot or iced. Speaking of iced, fresh juices such as squeezed orange juice, Strawberry Lychee Fizz, Butterfly Pea Lemon Sparkling or Mimosa Cup are on the menu.
In the morning, get your day off to a good start with an idealbreakfast formula. From €6.90 to €8.90, you can choose from a menu that includes a hot drink, a sweet treat and homemade granola. For our part, we opt for the macchiatto accompanied by a fluffy matcha marble cake.
The brunch menu, which is served between 11am and 4pm, offers a wide range of choices. Guacamole with kimchi, fried tofu, karaage-style fried chicken, corn soup and burrata with Thai basil pesto, accompany savory or sweet pancakes, grilled cheese with nori leaves (highly recommended) and generous Yuzu Benedict. Everything is delicious and prepared to order.
Then it's on to the pastry! Let yourself be seduced by the cookies, available in sesame chocolate or hazelnut praline chocolate. Don't miss the famous chiffon cake with pandan and coconut- it's a delight.
The place's must-try specialty (apart from the vanilla and durian version of tiramisu, reserved for connoisseurs) is the Cookie ice cream, a cookie with a scoop of Isaka ice cream on top. If you're in the mood for new flavors, try the pandan and coffee affogato, a surprisingly cold hot dish.
The range of pastries and entremets evolves with the seasons. On our visit, we discovered a sweet black sesame, mango passion fruit, strawberry and dark chocolate entremets.
In short, if you're looking to treat yourself from morning to night, grab your morning "petit noir" in the 13th arrondissement, or brunch all week long on the flavors of Asia, here's a spot that's sure to please.
