The weather continues to be unstable over much of France at the start of the week. This Monday, December 9, 2024, Météo France has placed 4 south-western départements under "vigilance orangeneige-verglas" (orangesnow-ice alert) and 12 others under " alerte jaune" (yellow alert).
Several departments in northern France have been placed on yellowflood alert. These include Pas-de-Calais, Nord, Ardennes, Marne, Aisne, Oise, Seine-Maritime, Eure, Calvados, Manche and Orne.
So what's the situation in Paris and the Ile-de-France region? This Monday, three departments in the Paris region have also been placed on yellowflood alert by Météo France. These are Val-d'Oise, Yvelines and Seine-et-Marne. All the more reason for Seine-et-Marne residents to be concerned. Remember, last October, this Île-de-France department - then under red alert - experienced historic flooding. The Grand Morin reached a record level of 3.75 meters. The streets of Crécy-la-Chapelle were under more than a metre of water.
As Vigicrues reminds us, yellow vigilance is a"risk of flooding generating localized overflows and damage, or of a rapid and dangerous rise in water levels, requiring particular vigilance, especially in the case of exposed and/or seasonal activities".
As a result of the heavy rainfall of recent days, the Grand Morin downstream in Seine-et-Marne is under close scrutiny. "The numerous rainy periods over the past few days, on already very wet soils, have caused the Grand Morin to react," warns Vigicrues in today's bulletin, adding that"levels have been rising again since last night", but that this is a"low flood".
