A veritable freeway serving the various sites of the Olympic Village - located, as a reminder, on the towns of Saint-Denis and Île-Saint-Denis - the Olympic Bridge has been closed to traffic ever since. After enabling Olympic and Paralympic athletes, Paris 2024 volunteers, coaches and other medical and village staff to travel in complete safety during this major sporting event, the bridge will now be open to the public from this Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Named in memory of Louafi Bougera, the first Franco-Algerian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal at the Amsterdam Games in 1928, the bridge pays tribute to this little-known sportsman, whose performances have received little publicity due to the racism he suffered.
So, to celebrate the grand opening of the new bridge on the Île-Saint-Denis, the Seine-Saint-Denis département promises a fanfare-filled inauguration, starting at 3.30pm and lasting all afternoon. A percussion band, a goodie-making workshop, food and drink, and other activities open to all and entirely free of charge await the public. See you at one of the two meeting points from 3.30pm!
A particularly isolated commune, before 1844 the only way to get to Île-Saint-Denis, the only island in the Seine-Saint-Denis département, was by ferry. The island now has three bridges, including the Louafi Bougera bridge inaugurated this winter.
