The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are waking up the capital this summer! Among the many events attracting crowds, tennis is sure to delight sports fans... Taking place from July 27 to August 4, 2024 for the Olympic Games, then from August 30 to September 7 for the Paralympic Games, the tennis and wheelchair tennis competitions are held at the prestigious Roland-Garros Stadium.

A brief history:

Tennis, a racket sport born in the 19th century, has evolved to become an essential Olympic discipline. First introduced at the Olympic Games in 1896, it was withdrawn after 1924 before making a triumphant comeback in 1988. The sport is played mainly in singles or doubles, on clay, hard or grass courts, with the aim of scoring points by hitting a ball over a net into the opponent's court.

As for wheelchair tennis, it was created in the 80s and included in the Barcelona Paralympic Games in 1992. Proof of its renown, all 4 Grand Slam tournaments include wheelchair tennis, while the ITF wheelchair circuit now includes over 150 tournaments.

In the history of the Olympic Games :

Tennis first appeared at the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens, marking the beginning of its Olympic history. After a long absence, it was reinstated at the 1988 Seoul Games, providing a new platform for global talent to shine. Since then, it has seen legends such as Steffi Graf and Rafael Nadal take gold.

French athletes to watch

French hopes are high for these Olympic Games. Among the players to watch closely is Caroline Garcia, currently one of France's top players, who will be hoping to shine on the Paris clay court. On the men's side, Ugo Humbert and Gaël Monfils, although in different phases of their careers, will be bringing their experience and determination to bear in a bid to win a medal for France.

Wheelchair tennis rules

As indicated on the official website of the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, wheelchair tennis uses the same rules as traditional tennis. However,"only one adaptation exists" due to the use of the wheelchair. It is possible to let the ball bounce twice before hitting it.

We also remind you that athletes are classified into two categories:"Open"for players with lower-limb damage, and"Quad"for players with upper- and lower-limb damage.
