Everything Everywhere All at Once was a small success in theaters, but its triumph at numerous American ceremonies has rekindled interest in the film, which won the Oscar for Best Picture and six other major awards this Sunday, March 12. Here's a chance to rediscover our review.

Imagine all the versions of you that could exist, if just one tiny detail of history had been changed. You could be a movie star, a famous scientist, a professor, a computer scientist, a gangster, a secretary, a TV presenter, a supermarket clerk... And now, imagine that all these versions of you exist simultaneously, in different universes, and that it's possible for you to switch from one life to another at the snap of a finger.

It's an idea as exciting as it is dizzying. That's the idea behindEverything Everywhere All at Once, the film directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and produced by the Russo brothers(Avengers) and A24. Released in the USA in March 2022, the film swept all before it at the 95th Oscars on Sunday March 12, winning 7 awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. This makesEverything Everywhere all at once the most awarded film in cinema history.

Our verdict

In this multiverse on the verge of collapse, humanity's hopes rest on Evelyn Wang, played by Michelle Yeoh, a Chinese-American woman who feels increasingly lost in her life, sunk in bills and family problems. With a script like this, the Daniels explore a theme that's all the rage at the moment, but with a fresh, unusual eye: no more cape-wearingsuperheroes lifting buildings. Evelyn is a simple laundress, overwhelmed by her daily routine and embroiled in a story much bigger than herself.

On the face of it, she doesn't have the résumé to be a superhero... And so much the better! This character, magnificently embodied by Michelle Yeoh, is human, flawed, fearful, clumsy, selfish, stubborn... In short, he's just like us. We follow Evelyn's evolution with great pleasure and interest, identifying with her fears, her doubts, her victories; not forgetting the secondary characters, who also have their own story and development.

This film already promises to be a cinematic classic. It brilliantly explores the concept of the multiverse, and finally gives us something to dream about, think about and invent: if you had made a different choice in your past, no matter how insignificant, what would your life be like today? The Daniels play with these different realities with great humor.

Yet the stakes of this story are not mocked. Although the identity of the story's great villain is quickly guessed, the film's antagonist is a complex character, sometimes endearing, and above all very menacing.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a spectacular piece of entertainment, delicately tackling universal subjects such as identity, acceptance of others and oneself, growing up and growing old, the search for happiness...

A wonderful film that Sortiraparis was unanimous in its praise for. We can't recommend it enough!
