Our review of Helldivers 2 :
Playtime: 15h
So, what is this Helldivers 2, which seems to be a hit with gamers on social networks...? Well, it's a very good vintage! Story-wise, it's simple, straightforward and highly effective! We're thrown into an intergalactic war without really understanding the ins and outs, but we don't really care... Here, it's the gun that does the talking. It's fun, and blowing up insects is addictive and cathartic.
As for the gameplay, it's pretty easy to get to grips with too. It's not rocket science to use the gun: as in any good shooting game, you aim and fire, paying attention to the amount of ammunition remaining. What really makes the game interesting here, in terms of gameplay, are the"stratagems", a kind of command sent to your mother ship to help you in your task, either by sending you equipment, or more directly by exterminating enemy groups via air strikes. You activate these stratagems by following a succession of directional buttons, which you have to press in the right order to trigger them.
And that's where it gets interesting: you'll need to establish strategies to use your stratagems (they recharge, rest assured) to best effect. Support weapons as soon as you land or for later, supplies at the right moment... Your way of playing, whether solo or in co-op, will have to evolve according to the situation. It's a great way to break the monotony of this type of game, with missions repeating themselves on every map.
Graphically speaking, we have more mixed feelings: the games themselves are graphically rather beautiful, while the loading phases (ships arriving in a given space, in particular) are much less so, lacking any real relief and looking a little sloppy. But this remains secondary, as the game concentrates on the more "cathartic" part of the game, namely the annihilation of belligerent species. We also regret the numerous connection bugs, which hamper the gameplay experience somewhat. But this is a game launch, it's normal and should be quickly corrected (if it isn't already).
Nonetheless, Helldivers 2 is a good game that makes you want to go back for more. We, for one, love spreading democracy with assault rifles and orbital strikes. Get ready!
If you're planning to buy the game, you've got a lot to look forward to... Get ready for an epic adventure, where cooperation is the key to success. The galaxy awaits its heroes. Are you up to the challenge?
