Who hasn't had ateddy bear as a security blanket or essential toy in childhood? Popular for decades, this soft little creature has taken its place in children's hearts, replacing the prettiest dolls. A true symbol of childhood, it is the focus of a new exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, from December 4, 2024 to June 22, 2025, which will delight young and old alike, and bring back fond memories!
Born at the beginning of the 20th century, the teddy bear represents an animal feared for its strength and ferocity, but in just a few decades has become an endearing toy to which children cuddle. The exhibition traces the history of bears and humans, from the first cohabitations in prehistoric times, to ancient cults, to the impact of the Church, which branded bears as greedy, lazy and even demonic.
Discover the shape of the first toys dating from 1920 in Germany and the USA, and their successive transformations, through almost 400 teddy bears from the museum's collections. These little bears have gone from being made of mohair and wood straw, heavy and rigid, to soft, sleepy fur - children's best companion! He's also featured in cartoons such as Winnie the Pooh and Paddington.
