More than 2,000 years separate us, yet the public's fascination withantiquity continues unabated. Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Babylonian civilizations gave rise to myths and monuments that have stood the test of time. Roman pyramids and temples, wars, battles against the gods, love stories: everything comes together to create beautiful films, from the setting to the script.
From its very beginnings, cinema has been fascinated by Antiquity. The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation tells the story of this long history, marked by so many masterpieces and unforgettable films. The Antiquity and Cinema exhibition, on view from December 12, 2024 to March 29, 2025, highlights this rich cultural relationship.
More than 200 works have been brought together: through photographs, film posters, costumes and props, set elements and film extracts, visitors discover or rediscover this rich filmography, featuring feature films of all ages, genres and audiences.
The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation explores the importance of these ancient cultures in cinematic art. Antiquity fascinates for many reasons, and this period can be used to convey messages and ideals that are far more modern. Religious narratives, exotic lands, tales of colonization, fantasies of heroes and their strength, wars, travel and self-discovery... Depending on the era and the country, Antiquity is told in many different ways.
Theexhibition alsolooks at the history of cinema through the prism of this ancient fashion. At every major period in the development of the 7th art, directors and actors have been able to rely on Antiquity to seduce and attract audiences and investors alike.
The exhibition features a wide variety of pieces, each telling a different story about the world of cinema. The Foundation not only highlights works from different eras, but also those who contributed to their creation. What would Ben-Hur be without his chariot, Liz Taylor without her Cleopatra dress, the heroes of Troy without their weapons and shields? Pieces from the greatest films are brought together for this not-to-be-missed exhibition!
