In Paris, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to going to the media library: a network of 57 libraries where you can borrow books, plus 15 specialized heritage libraries. Located in every arrondissement of the capital, the libraries are open to everyone, adults and children alike, whether or not they live in Paris. Similarly, anyone can borrow books from the City of Paris libraries, with a free annual subscription (reserved for books and digital books, magazines, comics, sheet music, CDs, etc.).
In the 16th arrondissement, the Germaine Tillion library offers collections almost exclusively dedicated to tourism and travel (the Bibliothèque du tourisme et des voyages, also known as BTV). The BTV's mission is to preserve and promote the heritage of the Touring Club de France library, offering the general public a vast collection of tourist guides, travelogues and other illustrated works. In all, over 20,000 documents can be consulted on site, while 11,000 are available on loan.
Since 1986 - when the City of Paris bought the Touring Club de France library and made it available to the public - the library has been the very first to be devoted to the subject of travel and tourism, and remains the only one of its kind in Paris. To consult the documents or borrow some on site, the library is open from Tuesday to Saturday (closed on Sundays and Mondays), from 1pm to 7pm, except on Wednesdays (open from 10am to 7pm). Shall we take a trip there soon?
