Perched on the heights of Buttes-Chaumont, in a small alley with an unobstructed view of the park and horizon, Vandal has recently set up shop. Set up by Paul Landre, former chef of Le Petit Keller, and his partner Alix Devallois, this sleek, minimalist place (we love the one-block, faux-concrete tables and benches) is a pocket sandwich shop.
And this one's confident in what it offers, since there are only 3 sandwiches on the menu. There's no room for error, then, with these 3 great classics of the genre: a rewriting of the mythical Vietnamese banh mi as a spicy sardine version, with pickles, herb salad and sriracha mayonnaise on the side; an egg sandwich and a dumpling sandwich. That's all there is to it.
But Paul Landre is right to be confident in his tastes and recipes: they are executed to perfection. Both naughty and generous, his sandwiches are made with carefully sourced products, in particular the bread from Union Boulangerie, which varies according to the sandwich chosen - sometimes a brioche loaf, sometimes a sandwich loaf, both as soft as you like.
I'm particularly fond of the poultry meatball sandwich, topped with a thick tomato sauce and a good layer of Parmesan, but the egg sandwich also comes into its own, with ajitsuke tamago marinated egg, celery remoulade, black sesame praline and dill.
Open every lunchtime, Monday to Friday, Vandal' s prices are low: €13 for a sandwich/drink menu (including the delicious Voyou ginger beer), €14 for a sandwich/dessert menu (currently an apple, almond and pumpkin seed crumble), €16 for a sandwich/drink/dessert menu. And for those with a small appetite, there's even a dedicated formula for 5€.
The kind of address that's been missing from the Buttes-Chaumont area!
