As of this year, all visitors to the Château de Vincennes who choose the self-guided tour have a tablet included in their admission ticket. Château de Vincennes is France's largest and only surviving medieval sovereign's residence.

Surrounded by a fortified enclosure more than 1,000 meters long, flanked by six towers and pierced by three gates, this complex is an exceptional example of thearchitecture and sculpture of the 1360-1410 period.

Who hasn't wanted to witness the daily life of a château in centuries gone by?

This is now possible at the Château de Vincennes, thanks to the use of an augmented reality tablet. Simply hold the tool in your hands, and you'll be immediately transported back in time through the screen.

There are two ways to do this:

  • The adult trail, for an immersive, individual experience.

From the legend of Saint Louis's Oak of Justice to the bombardments of the 20th century, via the period of splendor during the reign of Charles V and the stage of state prison, take a tour of the château at your own pace and discover the key moments in its history!

On the second floor, for example, you can take part in the meeting between King Charles V and his uncle Emperor Charles IV in the Council Chamber.

  • The family trail, to share the experience with young and old alike.

The family trail is designed to be followed by an adult and a child, thanks to adapted texts. Explore the different areas as a team, following a quest to help three little time-travelers with a passion for history!

Games linked to the monument 's decor and beautiful illustrations are interspersed throughout the tour, making it fun and rewarding for young and old alike.

Scientific work

To bring these never-before-seen scenes to life, an in-depth historical reconstruction was carried out in collaboration with several experts. Based on the work carried out by Jean Chapelot, director of research at the CNRS on the Château de Vincennes, and the many historical sources available, the Centre des monuments nationaux and Alto ( designer of the tablets) coordinated the dialogue between scientific experts and specialists in 2D and 3D reconstructions.
