In 1984, Jack Lang launched the Journées du Patrimoine, a cultural event enabling the French to (re)discover the country's monuments, places of art, power and creation, in order to highlight the richness of every corner of France. The event has spread to several European countries, and is as popular as ever, even for this 41st edition on September 21 and 22, 2024.
These "Journées du Patrimoine" (Heritage Days) give Parisians and residents of the Ile-de-France region the chance to visit, free of charge, important sites in French history, such as châteaux, ministries, the Eiffel Tower, the Cour des Comptes (French Audit Office)... Or even Charles de Gaulle's office in Paris.
The Charles de Gaulle Foundation, housed in a private mansion on the Faubourg Saint-Germain in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, pays tribute to this great figure. On this weekend of the JEP, the foundation is opening its doors to the public free of charge, allowing us to learn more about the first president of the Fifth Republic, and above all about his post-World War II activities.
Guided tour of the Faubourg Saint-Germain townhouse, typical of the late 19th century, which housed the headquarters of the Rassemblement du peuple français (RPF), the movement founded by General de Gaulle in 1947. The office he occupied there from 1947 to 1958 remains unchanged.
The tour includes:
- the mansion itself, its architecture and its history. It remains one of the few buildings in France today to have undergone no structural or decorative alterations, and is listed as a historical monument.
- the actions of General de Gaulle, President of the Rassemblement du Peuple Français during the Fourth Republic, a period rich in political battles and a prelude to his return to power in 1958.
The visit includes an exhibition, talks by specialists (historians, archivists, etc.), a film screening and a play area for young visitors.
The detailed program will be published on the Fondation Charles de Gaulle website in early September: www.charles-de-gaulle.org
Please note that reservations are not required, and that admission is free, but in small groups. To avoid long waits, we advise you to come early. A visit not to be missed in September!
