Paris and the Île-de-France region have been placed under a vigilance orange for snow and freezing rain this Thursday, November 21, 2024. Due to the snowfall forecast for Thursday, November 21, 2024, the Prefect of Police and Prefect of the Paris Defense and Security Zone is calling on drivers to exercise caution and activating its level 2 emergency measures. We tell you all about it...

Could it be snowing in Paris and the Île-de-France region this November 21, 2024 ? If Méteo France is to be believed, there's a good chance of it, and with the rain starting to fall, icy conditions are sure to follow. Due to the arrival of a new disturbance, linked to the low-pressure system Caetano, Orange vigilance "Neige et Verglas" ("Snow and freezing rain") has been triggered in Île-de-France this Thursday, November 21, 2024. In view of the forecast snowfalls, the Snow and Ice Plan has been upgraded to level 2, requiring safety measures to be taken on the roads.

The Paris Prefecture of Police, headed by Laurent Nuñez, has announced increased vigilance throughout the Ile-de-France region between 11am and 8pm. Météo France is forecasting a heavy snowstorm, starting in the late morning and crossing the region before moving eastwards in the evening. Traffic conditions are likely to be difficult, despite the salt-spreading and snow-clearing operations being carried out by the Direction des routes d'Île-de-France.

The switch to level 2 of the Snow and Ice Plan reinforces emergency measures. The main measures include:

  • A 20 km/h reduction in the speed limit on all major roads.
  • Aban on overtaking heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on main roads.

Winter conditions restrict traffic on several routes

The Prefect of Police has introduced traffic restrictions on several key roads in the region to cope with the winter weather. These measures are primarily aimed at goods vehicles, and apply to the following routes:

Axes affected :

  • Ring road
  • A86
  • Francilienne (A104, RN104, RN184)
  • National and departmental roads: RN12, RN13, RN10, RN1104, RN1, RD7, RD910, RD317, RD914, RD444, and other secondary roads.
  • Strategic access: airports (Charles de Gaulle, Orly), major business hubs (La Défense, Rungis).

Impact on users :

  • Risk of major delays on affected routes.
  • Partial bans on certain vehicles, especially heavy goods vehicles.

250 km of traffic jams were recorded this morning at 1pm. Traffic is at a standstill on the RN10, particularly near Trappes. Heavy goods vehicles are at a standstill on the N12 and A86. Some stretches of the N12 in the south-west of Paris and the surrounding area are icy, causing traffic jams. In Velizy, the snow is making bus traffic difficult. Many lines were disrupted. The same applies to bus routes in the south of Yvelines. The Prefects of Yvelines and Essonne have suspended school transport this Wednesday. Parents are invited to collect their children from 3pm.

In Seine et Marne, not only school transport but also all bus routes are disrupted this Friday.

Authorities are urging users to be extra vigilant. If you absolutely must travel, use public transport, equip yourself with snow tires, and prepare a survival kit including warm clothing, food and water. Motorists are invited to check traffic conditions in real time on Sytadin or Bison Futé, as well as forecasts on the Météo France website.

For your own safety and that of others, clear the snow in front of your home and salt the sidewalks without blocking water drains. Avoid contact with fallen electrical wires, and only use heating appliances that comply with the relevant standards.

We advise you to follow the authorities' instructions via the media or social networks, in particular the @prefpolice account on Twitter. Local radio stations and 107.7 motorway stations are also reliable sources.

These measures are designed to prevent accidents and limit disruption in a region where such bad weather is still rare. Caution is therefore called for to get through this episode in complete safety.

This risk of snow and freezing rain could also impact traffic on the roads of the Île-de-France region this Thursday, November 21. Motorists are therefore urged to be extremely vigilant, and to inform themselves about the instructions and traffic conditions before taking to the road.
