This line, departing from Gare de Lyon, accounts for a third of the country's high-speed rail traffic, and it's going to close for a few days this autumn! From November 8 to 12, 2024, TGV trains between Paris and Lyon will stop running, due to work to prepare for the commissioning of a new signalling system. Regular users of this line, Europe's busiest, will have to get organized for four days.
Commissioned in 1981, the line has already been undergoing work for five years, but until now there has been nointerruption to traffic. This change should improve train regularity and reliability, and increase the line's capacity by 25%, for even more daily round trips between the two French cities. But in the meantime, the work is likely to have a major impact on a large number of passengers throughout the region!
Connections between the South-East and the Pays-de-la-Loire, Brittany, Normandy, Centre Val-de-Loire and Hauts-de-France regions will not be maintained. Among other things, direct trains between Lyon and Rennes, as well as Montpellier and Nantes, will not be available, and other lines are affected, such as Le Havre-Marseille or Lille-Marseille. Some lines will have a longer journey time if they use the classic lines, with a 4h30 journey time instead of 2h between Paris and Lyon, or a 7h journey time instead of 3h between Paris and Marseille.
In short, if you're planning a trip to the south at this time of year, it's advisable to postpone it if you can!
