The film was due to be released directly on HBO Max, the Warner Bros. platform, but following disastrous test screenings, the release was simply cancelled. It will remain in the Warner closet.

With Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, due in cinemas from October 21 , 2022, the future of DC Comics movies is taking a surprising turn. The Flash and Aquaman 2 are in an uncomfortable position, due to the scandals caused by their interpreters Ezra Miller and Amber Heard, while Batgirl has just been cancelled. The film, directed by Belgians Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah(Bad Boys For Life, Ms Marvel), was fully shot and in post-production when disastrous test screenings prompted Warner Bros, the film's producers, to cancel its release. Originally planned for HBO Max, Batgirl will be released neither on the platform nor in theaters.

And yet, the feature film was eagerly awaited by fans. It was to mark the return of Michael Keaton as Batman and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Losses: over 90 million dollars. To make this choice, the film had to be really bad. Warner Bros spoke of a work "that doesn't work", reveals American media outlet The Wrap.
