The Musée Zadkine explores the relationship between two exceptional artists: discover the exhibition Modigliani/Zadkine, une amitié interrompue, from November 14, 2024 to March 30, 2025.

The Paris of artists has given rise to many relationships. Amedeo Modigliani and Ossip Zadkine met at the beginning of the 20th century, and struck up a brief but important friendship. The Musée Zadkine brings this abruptly ended relationship back to life with a brand-new exhibition on view from November 14, 2024 to March 30, 2025.

In the 1910s, two young sculptors full of dreams and hopes arrived in Paris. Modigliani and Zadkine met in the capital and quickly struck up a friendship. Times were hard for these apprentice artists, and the war would separate them. Yet these early years of self-reliance left a lasting impression on Ossip Zadkine. The Modigliani/Zadkine, an interrupted friendship exhibition brings this little-known friendship to life through almost 90 paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and period documents.

Between 1910 and 1920, the Montparnasse district of Paris was the capital of the art world. During the Roaring Twenties, great French and international artists such as Pablo Picasso, Antoine Bourdelle, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Man Ray... met there. In this creative whirlwind, Zadkine and Modigliani dream of becoming renowned sculptors. Both chose to reject academic codes, to create something new.

The tour brings the two artists face to face. Depending on the period, the works respond to, oppose and enrich each other. Over the years, we can see common influences and references to each other's work. Then life paths evolve, and the links fade.

The First World War puts an abrupt end to the artists' dreams. Zadkine enlisted in the Foreign Legion, and suffered from this inhuman war. Deemed too weak to enlist, Modigliani abandoned sculpture and turned to painting. This new medium enabled the painter to become better known and appreciated. Sadly, Modigliani died young, in January 1920.

Although they lost touch, Zadkine retained a great deal of admiration and affection for his tragically ill-fated friend. The works in this exhibition show the moments they spent together on café terraces, their discussions and shared artistic influences...

Zadkine willingly participated in building the legend of his friend. Films, photographs and documents reveal the sculptor's role in building and safeguarding Modigliani's memory and work.

Contemporary artists complete the exhibition: their modern vision bears witness to the importance of the two creators in the art world, and the influence they still have today.

Come and discover this cross-disciplinary exhibition at the Musée Zadkine.
