Nicknamed the "second Michelangelo", this Neapolitan artist left his mark on art history through his talent and his many Baroque works. His reputation spread beyond the borders of Europe, and he also painted portraits of various European royal families, including a certain Louis XIV...
The Château de Versailles is devoting an original exhibition to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, also known as le Bernin. Centered around Bernini's famous bust of the Sun King, the exhibition focuses on the Neapolitan painter and sculptor, as well as his trip to France in 1665. From June 3 to September 28, 2025, come and discover the exhibition Genius and Majesty: Louis XIV by Le Bernin.
Several of Bernini's most important works are now on display at the château. By 1665, when Bernini came to Paris at the invitation of the king, his talent was recognized throughout Europe, and his reputation was well established. In fact, his skills could be jealously guarded by Italy: Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, had to put pressure on Pope Alexander VII to let him come to France.
Much sought-after by the elite, much appreciated by the people, Bernini was a real star, to the extent that his visit to Paris was an event. The exhibition tells the story of this important journey, as well as the context and details of the creation of the bust of Louis XIV, through a variety of exceptional works and documents.
Art and history lovers won't want to miss this unique exhibition, which gives us a close-up look at the famous bust of the king.
