Since the end of the 12th century, the buildings of the Louvre have dominated the heart of Paris; situated on the outskirts of the city, they were gradually overtaken by it and then incorporated into its center. At the same time, the dark fortress of the early days was transformed into the modernized residence of Francis I, and then into the sumptuous palace of the Sun King.
