The history of the building is unusual. Located in the heart of Paris, along the Seine and facing the Tuileries Gardens, the museum is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a building constructed for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The building is thus, in a way, the first "work" in the Musée d'Orsay collections, presenting the art of the few decades between 1848 and 1914.
