On August 19, 1862, the Théâtre impérial du Châtelet gave its inaugural performance in the presence of Empress Eugénie: Rothomago, a fairy tale by Messrs. d'Ennery, Clairville and Monnier. With its 2,500 seats and 24 x 35-meter stage, it was the largest theatre in Paris at the time. Today, it remains a landmark of the French stage.
