Following the popular success of the Spanish expedition of 1823 and its victory at the Trocadéro fort by the Duc d'Angoulême, Louis XVIII decided to build a monument to this feat of arms: the "Villa Trocadéro". The former Palais du Trocadéro was subsequently built by Gabriel Davioud and Jules Bourdais for the 1878 Universal Exhibition. Later, for the 1937 Universal Exhibition, the building was demolished and replaced by the Palais de Chaillot, which retained part of its skeleton and the configuration of its two semicircular wings.
