The archaeological crypt in the forecourt of Notre Dame was built by the City of Paris following excavations carried out between 1965 and 1972 by the Comission du Vieux Paris. It was inaugurated on Tuesday, September 23, 1980. In the crypt, you'll find a summary of the history of Paris: from Gallo-Roman remains, ramparts and the foundations of the Basilica of Saint-Etienne, to pieces of 19th-century sewage pipe.
