For a long time, Montmartre was a village outside Paris. Its name may come from Mons Martis (Mount of Mars), as the hill was the site of a temple dedicated to Mars in Roman times. It became part of Paris in 1860 and was an important site of the Paris Commune in 1871. Since the 20th century, Montmartre has been a beacon of painting, welcoming artists such as Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Van Gogh and Modigliani. These photos are a small souvenir of the less touristy parts of this beautiful village.
