Etienne Marcel acquired the "maison des piliers" on behalf of the municipality in July 1357. The "maison des piliers" was replaced in the 16th century by a palace designed by the Italian architect Boccador. Construction began in 1533 and was completed in 1628. Extensions were added between 1836 and 1850, while preserving the Renaissance facade. A fire set by the Communards in May 1871 reduced the palace to ashes. The building was rebuilt between 1874 and 1882 to designs by architects Théodor Ballu and Edouard Deperthes. The Renaissance-style façade was largely inspired by that of the former building.
