What do French think about the curfew decreed by Emmanuel Macron? The French President announced, on Wednesday October 14, 2020, the implementation of a curfew in Paris, Île-de-France and 8 cities in order to halt the spread of Covid-19. A survey carried out by Odoxa-Dentsu Consulting for Franceinfo and Le Figaro released on Thursday October 15 says 64% of the French are for it.
When looking at the different use of the different political sides of the fence of the surveyed, a few differences can be noticed. Of course, 83% of the LREM voters approve this restriction, when about 70% of Les Républicains supporters agree wholeheartedly. As for Rassemblement national, the survey gives 52% of its voters for the implementation of the curfew.
Yet, even though a large majority of citizens accepts the decision of the head of state, the survey says fewer are doubtful. As a matter of fact, 54% of the surveyed think the French will not stick to the curfew in areas concerned. In Rassemblement national electors, 71% of them agree. Out of the 1,004 French people surveyed, said to represent a “representative sample of the French population 18+”, 63% of them acknowledge President Macron has been clear, and 55% of the surveyed think the head of state showed he understood the country’s preoccupations.
Yet, if the French somehow accept the government’s decisions, 53% are still doubting of Emmanuel Macron’s sincerity. By the way, 57% of the surveyed do not trust him to make the right measures amid the fight against the pandemic. One thing is sure: the trending words on Twitter during the President’s address show the state of mind of a part of the population: “Unfair”, “incoherent”, or even “young” show the resentment curfew has sparked in the public opinion.
