As the law about the health pass and vaccinal obligation is instated from August 9, a DREES study shows, according to data collected between July 19 and 25, 2021, 87% of patients hospitalized are not vaccinated.

As the Delta variant keeps on swiftly spreading over the French territory, causing a fourth epidemic wave, the issue of the health pass and compulsory vaccination keeps on dividing the people. While some of the French have doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccine, an investigation led by the DREES brings new elements as of the impact of the vaccinal campaign on hospitals.

Previously, the study stated that according to data collected between May 31 and July 11, 85% of patients hospitalized – including in intensive care – are not vaccinated. Over the period covering July 19 to 25, 2021, the DREESE speaks of a slight decrease with 83% of patients hospitalized not being vaccinated. People fully and partially vaccinated respectively represent 6% and 11% of hospitalizations.

Yet, in intensive care, non-vaccinees represent 87% of the sick. Among Covid victims over the period, 82% were not vaccinated. Another study also showed that non-vaccinees represented 96% of symptomatic cases who tested positive to Covid. As for positive RT-PCR tests performed between July 19 and 25, 2021, the DREES states the incidence rate is seven times lower in people fully vaccinated than in people who were not immunized.

This Thursday July 29, 2021, interviewed on BFMTV, La Pitié-Salpêtrière nephrology unit head Pr. Gilbert Deray also shared his observations about the profiles of patients hospitalized because of coronavirus. He said hospitalized vaccinated patients showed comorbidities, making them more vulnerable to the disease; while as for non-vaccinees, they were younger and showing no factors likely to cause severe disease.

He also spoke about non-vaccinated patients’ or their relatives’ regrets: “It is always the same conversation: whether the patient can no longer talk (because they passed away), the family tells if ‘If we only knew’, including people saying ‘I was not against the vaccine, but I was in a rush because I’m forty, I was safe’; please do not wait and get vaccinated”.
