AP-HP Director General Martin Hirsch wrote in an internal email there were “encouraging signals” about the Covid-19 epidemic. Is this the beginning of the end of the fifth wave in France?

Thanks to the Omicron variant, the Covid-19 epidemic is currently experiencing a change. As contaminations are breaking records, severe cases have grown rarer. The number of patients in ICU has been decreasing for three days in a row, and AP-HP director general Martin Hirsch shared his optimism in an internal email alluding do “encouraging signals”.

Pr. Alain Fischer shares this optimism as he speaks of a “quiet period” likely “to open in front of us”, in an interview with L’Express. He says that by March, France will have reached “a very good control of the current wave” since “the global level of protection of the people will be quite high”, between the vaccine booster campaign and “the protection induced by the infection”.

The epidemic wave is slowly starting to decline, according to the AP-HP indicators. Martin Hirsch says the number of calls to paramedics for Covid-19 is decreasing as well. Is this time for us to let the virus run free as Spain intends to do? “It is undoubtedly too soon”, Pr. Fischer thinks, for Spanish people are more vaccinated than the French. He says it will be possible in the medium term to track the Covid epidemic like the seasonal flu.
