Brrrr, the nights are going to be cold in the capital from this Monday, January 8, 2024! While the end-of-year festivities saw above-normal temperatures, with not a snowflake on the horizon, the next few weeks of January look set to be much cooler and more suited to winter, with sub-zero temperatures expected. The latter are due to the"Moscow-Paris" phenomenon, which has already swept across Sweden and Norway, with record lows of between -30 and -40 degrees!
The polar cold is coming straight from Siberia and Scandinavia, with below-normal mercury and a high risk of morning frosts. According to Météo France, a powerful high-pressure system will arrive on the western side of Europe at the end of the weekend, replacing past lows with zones of high pressure. This change in air masses will freeze France, with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing, especially between Monday and Wednesday.
Overnight, temperatures will be well below zero, between -3 and -5 degrees in the Paris region, before gradually improving next Sunday. During the day, Monday January 8 and Tuesday January 9 will be the coldest days, but the mercury will rise to between 3 and 5 degrees by Thursday. Although this phenomenon occurs every three to four years, it is a particularly sudden cold snap, albeit of lesser intensity, which has not been seen since February 2018, according to the weather service.
