At around 11:30 this Wednesday morning, the Musée Cognacq-Jay posted a succinct message on its social networks: " The museum is exceptionally closed today. We apologize for any inconvenience caused." In the early afternoon, the City of Paris issued an official statement, explaining the reasons for the unscheduled closure.
The museum was the victim of an " extremely violent " robbery on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, shortly after it opened to the public. The municipal and national police were quickly able to intervene on the scene, says the city of Paris.
Visitors were present at the museum during the incident, as were staff working at the Paris-managed museum. No injuries were reported, but the municipality has set up a psychological unit to help any museum staff who may need assistance.
Several objects were stolen during the robbery. The Musée Cognacq-Jay houses a collection of 18th-century art carefully assembled by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ, founders of the department store La Samaritaine. The museum exhibits works of art and period furniture. It is not yet known what exactly was stolen from the Musée Cognacq-Jay. " The damage is currently being assessed ," says the City of Paris, adding that an investigation has been launched to identify and arrest the robbers.
The Musée Cognacq-Jay has announced that it will remain closed until Tuesday December 10. Tickets for the Luxe de poche exhibition will be refunded.
