What can we expect to see in our daily lives from April 1, 2025? Social benefits, real estate, visas, sick leave... What's changing?

Month after month, announcements follow and things change. Throughout the year, laws, measures, restrictions and decrees come into force in France, directly impacting the daily lives of the French. So every month brings its share of new developments and issues, and sometimes it can be hard to keep up with the flow of information.

To help you, we prepare a monthly roundup of what's changing so you can get ready. Whether it's economic, social, environmental, transport, traffic, health,education and much more, we take stock of what's in store, whether it's regional in Ile-de-France ornational.

As spring sets in, it's time for April. In this season of renewal, new measures and reassessments are also expected in April 2025 in Paris and the Île-de-France region. So, what's changing this month? Here are the announcements that could have an impact on your daily life:

Several social benefits have been increased by 1.9%:

  • Revenu de Solidarité Active (RSA): a single person will see this benefit increase by 12.08€ (647.79€ per month vs. 635.71€ previously).
  • Allocation Familiale (BMAF): the monthly basis of calculation has been increased by €8.86 (€475.30 per month vs. €466.44 previously).
  • Allocation aux Adultes Handicapés (AAH): monthly calculation base increased by 19.30€ (€1035.35 per month vs. €1016.05 previously).
  • The Prime d'Activité benefit is also affected by this increase.

Taxes :

  • Indexation of the income tax scale to inflation: The brackets of the income tax scale will be revalued by 1.8% to take account of inflation.
  • Differential contribution on high incomes (CDHR): Taxpayers with an annual tax income in excess of €250,000 (single person) or €500,000 (couple) will be subject to a minimum tax of 20% on their income, if their effective tax rate is below this threshold.
  • Extension of tax reduction for donations to associations: The "Coluche" scheme, which allows a 75% tax reduction on donations to associations helping people in difficulty, has been maintained and extended to associations fighting violence against women and domestic violence.

Real estate :

  • Reinforcement of the zero-rate loan (PTZ): The PTZ has been extended to all new homes throughout France, subject to a certain number of resources.
  • Transfer duties (DMTO): Local authorities can increase transfer duties by 0.5 points, raising the ceiling to 5%.

Daily allowances and sick leave :

  • Reduced ceiling on daily sickness benefit: The ceiling on daily sickness benefit will be lowered from 1.8 times the SMIC to 1.4 times the SMIC, resulting in a reduction of around 12 euros per day for the employees concerned.

Unemployment insurance :

  • Changes to benefit periods: The age thresholds for extended benefit periods will be raised. Jobseekers aged 55 to 56 will be entitled to a maximum compensation of 22.5 months, while those aged 57 and over will be entitled to 27 months. Jobseekers under 55 will be entitled to a maximum of 18 months' compensation.
  • Monthly payment of the back-to-work allowance (ARE): The ARE will now be paid on a 30-day monthly basis, standardizing the amount received each month, regardless of the number of calendar days.

Employment of senior citizens :

  • Phased retirement: The minimum age for phased retirement will be lowered to 60, subject to proof of 150 paid-up quarters. In addition, the employer's agreement will remain mandatory, but any refusal will now have to be justified.

Travel :

  • Visa required to visit the UK: From April 2, 2025, a visa will be required to discover the treasures of the British capital, Liverpool and Glasgow. The UK is introducing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), a fee-paying digital document required for all European travelers.
