Unlike 2022, 2023 and 2024, the opening and closing ceremonies at Cannes 2025 will not be hosted by a French actress, but by a French actor. Following in the footsteps of Virginie Efira, Chiara Mastroianni and Camille Cottin, Thierry Frémaux and Iris Knobloch have chosen Laurent Lafitte as Master of Ceremonies for the 78th edition of the world's most important cinema event.
A former resident of the Comédie-Française, the actor, screenwriter and director is known for his deadpan humor and talent for both comedy and drama in films such as Paul Verhoeven's Elle, Papa ou Maman, and L'Origine du monde, which he also directed. It's a bold choice on the part of the Cannes Festival organizers, who are calling on an actor who speaks to the French public but a little less to the international audience.
The actor will be in charge of presenting the jury (whose members are not yet known), which will elect the winner of the Palme d'Or and award the other prestigious prizes at this 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, to be held this year from May 13 to 24, 2025.
Most of the Official Selection will be revealed on April 10, at the traditional and eagerly-awaited press conference. In the meantime, take a look at the films that could well be selected!
