Like every spring, the departmental competitions organized around the best traditional baguettes are back. The baguette, whether traditional or classic, is an institution in France. According to a study carried out for the Fédération des entreprises de boulangeries (FEB) in 2021, 320 baguettes are sold in France every second!
Since 2022, the baguette has been on UNESCO's list of the world's intangible cultural heritage. Rima Abdul Malak, former French Minister of Culture, hailed the inclusion of the baguette as "a wonderful recognition for our craftsmen and the unifying places that our bakeries represent ". " In its various forms, whether traditional or reinvented by our craftsmen, the baguette has been a staple of French daily life - morning, noon and night - for several centuries, and has been exported to many countries ", added the former Minister of Culture in 2022.
While the origin of the baguette dates back to the long loaves of the 17th century, its consumption became widespread during the 20th century, explains the French Ministry of Culture. Since then, there have been two opposing camps: those who prefer the classic baguette, and those who prefer the traditional baguette, which is made from only salt, water, yeast or sourdough and wheat flour.
So, every spring, to determine the best traditional French baguettes in each département, competitions are organized. Bringing together a number of artisan bakers, these competitions are an opportunity for the jury to smell, touch and taste the traditional baguettes presented in competition, in order to select the best among them. As in previous years, the Chambres de Métiers et de l'Artisanat d'Île-de-France have chosen the winners for 2025 from a selection of bakers based in Seine-et-Marne, Essonne, Yvelines, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-d'Oise.
