Zadkine Museum Reopens for Nuit des Musées

    ### A new hanging, new acquisitions

The Zadkine Museum invites you to discover, on the occasion of Nuit des Musées, a refreshed display that highlights the museum’s recent acquisitions: a suite of drawings on Hercules’ labors, a glass-encased piece by Valentine Prax, and above all two exceptional reliefs, titled Women and Dogs and Three Stags, preempted in November 2025. These masterful works, true Art Deco sculptures, were conceived for a Parisian hotel that has since disappeared—the Mayen Hotel—and are being shown to the public for the first time.

Zadkine Museum, an artist’s workshop, a museum, and a garden dotted with sculptures

Sculptor Ossip Zadkine and painter Valentine Prax spent nearly four decades together—from 1928 to 1967—inside the house, studios, and garden on rue d’Assas. This quiet haven in the heart of Montparnasse became the Zadkine Museum in 1982, thanks to a legacy left to the City of Paris by Valentine Prax. The artist’s wife devoted the last years of her life to defending Zadkine’s memory and preserving the atmosphere of these studios where the two artists created a large portion of their work. Today, the Zadkine Museum is one of the few workshop spaces still open to the public, bearing witness to Montparnasse’s golden era.

The rotating display of the collection—featuring Zadkine sculptures alongside Prax’s paintings and photographs—changes each year. It presents the iconic works of the sculptor, from his early days in cosmopolitan Paris of the avant-garde to worldwide recognition in the 1950s. One gallery of the route is devoted to Prax’s work and her interest in the glass-plate technique, drawn from folk art. This year, two exceptional acquisitions take pride of place in the prewar and Art Deco room. The reliefs Women and Dogs and Three Stags, acquired in November 2025, beautifully demonstrate Zadkine’s talent and his mastery of direct carving.

Harp, viola and flute concert by Trio Topaze

    ### Excerpts from the trios by Claude Debussy, Ladislas de Rohozinski and Mel Bonis, with readings of Guillaume Apollinaire's poems

On the occasion of Europe’s Night of Museums, the Trio Topaze (flute, viola and harp) will offer the public a program that echoes Ossip Zadkine’s artistic journey through the 1910s–1920s. Musicians Lucie Humbert, Alexandra Morand and Claire Rousset will perform excerpts from Debussy’s, Rohozinski’s and Bonis’s trios, interwoven with readings of Guillaume Apollinaire’s poetry.

At the heart of Paris’s avant-garde scene, music, poetry and sculpture seek to invent a new language. The trios by Debussy, Rohozinski and Bonis, blending breath, matter and light, interact with Apollinaire’s verses, whose poetry captures the rhythms, landscapes and impressions of this vibrant era. Zadkine, present in the same artistic circles, shares this search for form and movement, where expression arises from inner impulse and worked matter. The program therefore offers a sensitive traverse of 1910s–1920s Paris, where every note and every line take shape like ephemeral sculptures in the sound space.

Concert at 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM

    Duration: about 20 minutes

Free, no reservation required, subject to availability

Opening the Zadkine Museum in the evening from 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Last entry at 10:30 PM

The Night of Museums offers a perfect chance to explore less-visited Parisian museums, as well as to revisit those we already cherish! In any case, there's always a great reason to stop by the Zadkine Museum during this special after-hours event.
