This spring, it's time to push open the doors of numerous museums and monuments in Paris and the Ile-de-France region, free of charge, for the latest edition of the European Night of Museums.
Every year, this cultural event invites Parisians to discover the heritage of the Île-de-France region by visiting numerous museums and monuments free of charge by night. From dusk until midnight, the cultural venues partnering the Nuit des Musées will be offering illuminated tours, fun activities, screenings and other special events. It's an opportunity to experience the museum in a fun and convivial way.
This year, Nuit des Musées returns on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at a number of venues, including the Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation.
Dedicated to the memory of all those deported from France between 1941 and 1944, the Martyrs of the Deportation Memorial is located on the Île de la Cité, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Created by the Association le Réseau du Souvenir, the memorial was inaugurated on April 12, 1962 by General de Gaulle.
The monument was designed by architect Georges-Henri Pingusson. Its architecture suggests certain characteristic aspects of the concentration camp world: imprisonment, oppression, impossible escape. Since November 23, 2007, this memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation has been listed as a historic monument. It is also one of the French Ministry of Defence's "hauts lieux de la mémoire nationale". On May 18, 2024, from 6pm, come and discover the architecture, history and memories of this highly symbolic place in Paris.
