We've been lamenting the paucity of medals for French athletics at these Paris 2024 Olympic Games : now the French delegation has one in track racing as Cyrena Samba Mayela took second place this evening in the women's 100 m hurdles.
Although the commentators initially believed her to be the Olympic champion, the 23-year-old Frenchwoman, who was competing in Paris for the first time in her career, ended up taking second place. In 12.34 seconds, she took the runner-up spot, behind American Masai Russell by just one hundredth and ahead of her compatriot Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who rounded off the podium in 12.36 seconds.
The champion already had a fine list of achievements to her name, including a European 100 m hurdles title in Rome in 2024 and a French title over the same distance at the national championships in 2023.
