Two years after the magnificent Moonlight (critically acclaimed time and again, most notably at the 2017 Oscars, where it won the Oscar for Best Picture), director Barry Jenkins returns behind the camera with If Beale Street Could Talk, released in cinemas on January 30, 2019. The film joins the Prime Video catalog this August 1, 2024.
For this new film, Barry Jenkins has chosen to adapt If Beale Street Could Talk, a cult novel by James Baldwin, himself an important figure in African-American culture in the second half of the 19th century. The story takes place in Harlem in the 1970s. Tish and Fonny have always loved each other and plan to marry. Just as they are about to have a child, the young man, victim of a miscarriage of justice, is arrested and imprisoned. With the help of her family, Tish embarks on a relentless battle to prove Fonny's innocence and get him released...
In front of the camera, Stephan James (seen in Ava DuVernay's Selma) and KiKi Layne play two lovers, residents of Harlem in the '70s, caught up in a whirlwind of amiscarriage of justice .
Regina King won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for this film. The film was also nominated for a 2019 Academy Award (Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and Oscar for Best Film Score). So it's definitely a must-see.
