Tolkien will be given all pride of place in 2019 especially with a huge exhibition this fall at Paris BNF and a movie.
Simply called TOLKIEN, this biopic will be released in movie theaters on Wednesday June 19, 2019 in France. Made by Finnish Dome Karukoski, TOLKIEN returns on the youth and training years of the famous British writer. The movie is also a story of love, bravery and brotherhood.
And to play the lead part, moviemaker Dome Karukoski bet on famous British actor Nicholas Hoult we’ve seen very young on About a Boy, X-Men: First Class and more recently Deadpool 2, The Favourite and X-Men Dark Phoenix.
Lily Collins and Colm Meaney are also starring in the movie.
Plot:
TOLKIEN returns on the famous writer’s youth and training years. Orphan, he finds friendship, love and inspiration with a group of school mates. But the First World War breaks out and threatens to destroy this “fellowship”. All these experiences will inspire Tolkien as he writes his novels taking place in Middle-Earth.

Review:
When we think about Tolkien, we think about a magical universe filled with mysteries and fantastic characters… We immediately think about the Eye of Sauron, the epic fights of the Lord of the Rings or the green valleys of the Shire. It’s hard to make a movie on the “common” life of the father or modern fantasy.
At a time where we see more and more biopics about rock stars and their real lives that are not always a bed of roses but filled with events and turns, what could we say about Tolkien, an orphan writer with a wild imagination.
And yet, Dome Karukosko has succeeded and takes us to the successful writer’s simple but fascinating universe. Born in South-Africa and raised in a green land in the middle of England by a loving mother feeding his imagination with fantastic stories, Tolien has always been fascinating by inventing new languages.
The movie makes numerous parallels that – even tough not realistic are very poetic – between the Lord of the Rings and what the writer is said to have lived in the trenches during WWI and the Battle of the Somme.
Tolkien is performed by an unrecognizable Nicholas Hoult who plays wonderfully, making this rather poor story very attractive and at the end of the day, we don’t know much about the successful novelist’s real life.
A yet romanticized movie but pleasant to watch with good actors and a lovely production but likely to disappoint purists.
