Boyhood by Richard Linklater at Centre Pompidou

Boyhood is one of those films that is remarkable in its conception. Shot over a 12-year period between 2001 and 2013, American director Richard Linklater shows us how a child grows up and constructs himself over time. The film screens on November 27, 2019 at the Centre Pompidou at 8pm. 12 years, that's how long it took to create the film. But why? Because Richard Linklater wanted to capture the evolution of a little boy "in real time".

Synopsis:
Since their father (played by Ethan Hawke) leaves for Alaska, 6-year-old Mason (played by Ellar Coltrane) and his sister Samantha (played by Lorelei Linklater) live with their mother in a small Texas town. Until he comes of age, we follow Mason's evolution. It's a "real time" film that shows the evolution of a family, how a little boy grows into adulthood. It's a film about learning that's very touching in its realism, while at the same time keeping its distance from the world of documentaries.

In 2 hours of film, we follow 12 years of evolution. From the age of 6 to 18, we follow the formation of a young Texan boy, tossed from one city to another with his sister and his mother, sometimes a couple, sometimes single. We see the evolution of a real boy, the actor Ellar Coltrane, as much as that of a fictional child, Mason Jr. It's an original cinematic object in its relationship with time, which has impressed audiences and critics alike.

After winning theSilver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as the Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Dramatic Film in 2015, this is a chance to see or re-see this remarkable film in both its result and its conception.
