Bros, review of Universal's first gay romantic comedy

Expected in cinemas on October 19, 2022, Judd Apatow's gossipy new production is unveiled in a first trailer. What makes it special is that it's the very first gay romantic comedy to be produced by a major studio.

In 2022, this precision may be surprising, but it is: Bros is the very first gay romantic comedy to be produced by a major American studio. And for this premiere, Universal is taking the plunge, sending in its ace in the hole, Judd Apatow, the king of Americanslapstick(40 Years a Virgin, Crazy Amy). Apatow called on his friend Nicholas Stoller(Our Worst Neighbors 1 and 2) to direct the film. But the personality who brought all these quality artists together is Billy Eichner, who wrote the screenplay and plays the lead role in a cast that features many actors from the LGBT+ community.

Trailer for Bros:

He has turned Bros into a meta-movie about the place of gays in the film industry. And according to the first trailer (to be discovered below), he was given carte blanche to express whatever was on his mind. The film will be released on October 19, 2022.

Synopsis of Bros:

It's the story of two men whose relationship could, perhaps, potentially, incidentally, turn into a love story. Perhaps. But they're very busy men.

Our review of Bros:

Bros is at once a meta work on the place of gays in the history of cinema, and more broadly on their invisibilization throughout history, a potty comedy often below the belt as only Judd Apatow 's crew knows how to produce, but also a rom-com with all the clichés of the genre. The mix could give the impression of being too much, but it's not. Every aspect of Billy Eichner 's story is skilfully balanced.

In fact, you don't need to notice that Billy Eichner plays a character named Bobby Leiber, also an author, to realize the autobiographical dimension of the film. That's why, despite the fact that this is a romantic comedy of the most hackneyed kind, you can't help but find the end result highly authentic. The character is a veritable double of his author, and both are as touching as they are funny.

As a result, we often find ourselves moved by this lovely film, which doesn't just depict love at first sight between two men, but also makes a number of necessary points. There's a fascinating monologue on the difficulty of achieving professional success when you're considered "too gay" by the rest of the world, and a comparison of the different generations of homosexuals that's as hilarious as it is tragic ("We got AIDS, they got Glee", Billy Eichener says during the film). With no great pretensions and deceptively simplistic writing, Bros manages to establish itself as one of October's most effective comedies.
