Like Girl before it, Lukas Dhont's debut feature Close shook up the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022. Vincent Lindon 's jury then awarded it a well-deserved Grand Prix. The film, which joins the Max catalog on September 1, 2024, tells the story of 13-year-old Léo and Rémi, lifelong friends.
Lukas Dhont's directing style and sensitivity, sometimes reminiscent of Xavier Dolan's, manage to move the viewer when this friendship is undermined. The filmmaker evokes a wide range of themes - friendship, of course, but above all bullying, the cruelty of schoolchildren, homosexuality and many others. Above all, it's the two young actors who play Léo and Rémi who surprise us. In their first film roles, Eden Dambrine and Gustav de Waele impress with their talent and the subtlety of their acting.
Although surrounded by great actresses, Emilie Dequenne(Au Revoir là-haut, Les Choses qu'on dit, les choses qu'on fait) and Léa Drucker (Adieu Paris, Incroyable mais vrai), the two young men capture the attention and move the audience. Close is a great beauty, and after the equally successful Girl, the very young Lukas Dhont is establishing himself as a filmmaker to watch, perhaps one of the most talented Belgian directors of his generation.
