You know her as Felicity, in the late 90s, Keri Russell, is back in theaters in Crazy Bear (Cocaine Bear in the original version). The film is based on a true story about a brown bear who went mad and killed after ingesting cocaine. The film opens in cinemas on March 15, 2023.
Crazy Bear is directed by Elizabeth Banks(Charlie's Angels). This is her most ambitious film, and her most successful! She directs as well as O'Shea Jackson Jr, Alden Ehrenreich and Ray Liotta. The film is dedicated to Ray Liotta, who passed away last May. Crazy Bear was his last film.
Our verdict
Right from the opening scene, the film announces itself as a big, scary, silly extravaganza. And despite its parodic aspect, Crazy Bear is seriously directed. Like Alexandre Aja(Piranha 3D, Crawl), Elizabeth Banks believes that just because her film is an offbeat B-movie doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be directed with the same care as too many other B-movies. Better known for her work as an actress, the filmmaker reveals all her talent here, and we really appreciate it. It's worth noting that the plot takes place at the same time as the true story, in 1985, and that the computer-generated images that bring the title bear to life are a real success, given the film's budget.
After the animal goes berserk, a whole gallery of characters find themselves trapped in the forest where it's rampaging: children playing hooky, the mother of one looking for them, drug dealers looking for their cocaine, the policeman chasing them and many others. From then on, the light-hearted comedy turns into a full-blown horror film, with one gory death after another that would make even the most blood-phobic swoon. That's what we love about Crazy Bear: the film works just as well in its comedy as in its horror, and one never encroaches on the other. It's a fine balancing act with a perfect balance. The result is a feature film with perfectly consistent themes.
Special mention must go to Ray Liotta, who, a few months before his death, delivered this brilliant performance as the infamous Syd, a cruel and greedy drug baron. Even in such an absurd score, he pulled it off wonderfully. He will be sorely missed!
The film is based on an astonishing true story: in 1985, a shipment of cocaine disappeared after the plane carrying it crashed, and was in fact ingested by a brown bear. Crazy Bear is a black comedy about a mismatched group of cops, criminals, tourists and teenagers who all converge in the heart of a forest deep in Georgia on the very spot where an enraged, bloodthirsty super-predator weighing over 200 kilos is on the prowl, driven completely mad by the ingestion of a staggering dose of cocaine.
