Following its premiere at the Champs-Elysées Film Festival, Master Gardener finally arrives in cinemas this Wednesday, July 5. Paul Schrader 's new drama stars Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver and Quintessa Swindell.
As in most of Paul Schrader's films, Master Gardener tells the story of a man who is above suspicion, but has a dark past. A priest in On the Road to Redemption, a poker player in The Card Counter, and now, a simple gardener in this new opus. Narvel 's (Joel Edgerton) past catches up with him when his employer, Mrs. Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver), entrusts him with the supervision and training of her grandniece, Maya (Quintessa Swindell).
The film adds nothing new to Schrader's filmography, and even has similarities with Taxi Driver and Legitimate Violence, two cult films he scripted. However, if you take Master Gardener out of Schrader's filmography, it's still a good film. The ambiguity of the protagonists makes for subtle acting, led by Edgerton as an ex-Nazi seeking redemption in flowers. If you've enjoyed the director's previous films, this new one is sure to please.
With its staging that could be described as classic, Master Gardener returns to the themes of New Hollywood, giving the film a timeless feel. Nevertheless, we regret the lack of surprise in this new title.
