The dynamic directing duo Toledano and Nakache return with Une Année Difficile. This ecological comedy features Pio Marmaï, Noémie Merlant and Jonathan Cohen in the lead roles. The film airs on Canal+ this Friday, April 26, 2024.
With its themes of over-indebtedness and ecological activism, the film seems to address relevant societal issues of our time. Bruno and Albert, played respectively by Pio Marmai and Jonathan Cohen, play two over-indebted individuals. Trying to escape the reality of their financial situation, they find themselves on the path to ecological activism, although their initial motivation is more oriented towards collateral benefits, such as free beer and chips, rather than any real commitment.
The strength of this production seems to lie in the intersection of two diametrically opposed worlds: that of over-indebtedness, a glaring problem in many modern societies, and the ecological movement, driven by determined young activists. Noémie Merlant adds her touch to the plot, playing one of the environmental activists with whom Bruno and Albert interact.
Accustomed to working with big names, Toledano and Nakache bet on rising stars of French cinema. Jonathan Cohen is the most impressive in his role as a father on the brink of collapse and severe depression. Pio Marmaï and Noémie Merlant are not to be outdone, touching our hearts with ease.
The filmmaking duo offer us their usual popular comedy-drama. This time, however, their message is resolutely modern. The script blends hilarious retorts with a social drama that follows seasoned environmentalists. There are many colorful characters to discover, with a special mention for the one played by Mathieu Almaric, a hilarious casino addict who will try anything to get around its prohibition.
In short, it's another great popular success for the duo behind Intouchables, Nos Jours Heureux and Le Sens de la Fête.
