Paris and film production have a long history. Numerous foreign filmmakers, particularly Americans, set down their suitcases and cameras in the French capital for the duration of a shoot. Is this also the case for Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos? In his new film, Pauvres Créatures, due for release on Wednesday January 17, Bella Baxter, the character played by Emma Stone, travels the world in search of discovery. Her odyssey takes her to several major capitals, including Paris, where she wanders the streets where palaces and brothels coexist.

But with its distinctive aesthetic, it's questionable whether the film was actually shot in Paris. And according to numerous interviews with the film's crew, all the exterior sets were actually recreated in the studio. In the film's press kit, we learn that the set design team drew their inspiration from the Paris of the Belle Epoque:"We always tried to imagine that the story was set in the past, but with a vision of the future," explained set designer Shona Heath.
So no, Poor Creatures was not shot in Paris, but in Budapest, at Origo Studios. However, Yorgos Lanthimos' vision of the French capital is unique and well worth discovering.
