The world of cinema is abuzz with the announcement of the first teaser for Beetlejuice, the sequel to the original film that marked the 80s. Under the direction of visionary Tim Burton, this new adventure promises once again to captivate fans of the early days as well as new generations.
Michael Keaton reprises his iconic role from Beetlejuice. Alongside him, Winona Ryder plays cult character Lydia Deetz, illustrating the depth and evolution of her talent since memorable roles in Stranger Things and The Four Daughters of Dr. March. Two-time Emmy Award winner Catherine O'Hara returns as Delia Deetz, enriching the film with her outstanding performance in Schitt's Creek and The Strange Christmas of Mr. Jack.
The cast expands with the presence of Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe, renowned actors who each bring a unique dimension to this eagerly-awaited sequel. Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), playing Lydia's rebellious daughter Astrid, and Arthur Conti, in his first major film role, round out the impressive cast.
The story picks up in Winter River, where the Deetz family faces yet another tragedy. Astrid's curiosity leads to the accidental opening of a portal to the beyond, threatening to unleash the chaotic Beetlejuice once again. The script, co-written by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith, promises an adventure blending dark humor and moving moments, true to the original spirit.
Expected in cinemas on September 11, 2024, the film is already shaping up to be a celebration of fantasy cinema. Fans of the genre and of Tim Burton 's unique universe can't wait to discover how this sequel will enrich the Beetlejuice mythos.
Our review of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice (2024):
If you're a fan of horrific comedies with no head or tail, this is the film for you. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is the logical sequel to the first opus released in 1988. However, you don't need to have seen it or remember it to enjoy this one. Tim Burton has thought carefully about his approach: although the story may seem to settle in slowly for some, this allows us to reintroduce all the people and (re)immerse ourselves in the film's wacky universe.
In the first part, we followed Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder. This time, the plot focuses on her daughter, Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. After the accidental death of her grandfather, the family returns to Winter River to attend his funeral, but also to clear out the house reputedly haunted by the memory of Beetlejuice. Astrid doesn't believe her mother's ghost stories, until the day she finds herself trapped in the afterlife, the realm of the dead. Lydia enlists the help of Beetlejuice, the prankster demon whose name must not be spoken, to save her.
From script to post-production, we find all the wacky codes of Tim Burton, with several iconic actors from the 1988 cast, such as Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara. A real treat! The plot is completely offbeat, and the modernized special effects, combining new technologies and stop-motion, bring a breath of fresh air to the second Beetlejuice installment. And let's not forget that each character is just as eccentric, especially Beetlejuice with his unpredictable, chaotic and offbeat personality, making us alternate between laughter, concern and embarrassment! The truth is, we quickly become attached to this versatile ghost, capable of singing for his beloved as well as escaping from his vengeful ex-wife!
A comedy that never gets boring, to be enjoyed without moderation or headaches!
