After the gang of bandits in her film Voleuses, Mélanie Laurent once again turns her attention to the world of organized crime in her new film Libre, a biopic about Bruno Sulak, played by Lucas Bravo(Emily in Paris).
Libre is available on Prime Video from November 1, 2024.
Synopsis: Inspired by true events, the film follows in the tumultuous footsteps of Bruno Sulak, the Arsène Lupin of the 20th century. A flamboyant hold-up man, a loyal friend and an icon of freedom, Bruno Sulak left his mark on the history of banditry with his non-violent hold-ups of numerous jewelry stores. While being actively sought by George Moréas, a non-conformist police commissioner as tough as he was perceptive, Sulak managed to escape from prison several times in order to find Thalie, his lover and accomplice, thus becoming public enemy number 1 of the 80s.
Although disapproved of by the Sulak family (the film was made without their consent), Libre revisits the adventures of this notorious robber of the 80s, who made it a point of honor never to resort to violence in his misdeeds, and was also known for his spectacular escape from prison on several occasions.
Polite, elegant and charismatic - in total contrast to the traditional figure of the robber - Bruno Sulak had the face of an angel and big, piercing blue eyes. In fact, it's the victims of his robberies - a string of Mammouth supermarkets around Avignon, then jewelry stores in Paris - who speak best of him: "He had the kind of eyes you never forget, a handsome, polite guy, very well made of himself," they say, still spellbound, as they testify in the film.
Presented as a rebel living a simple life on the bangs of society, a clean-handed hold-up man, a thug with values and morals, Mélanie Laurent's film pays tribute to Bruno Sulak's humanity and intelligence, while also taking some liberties with reality.
While he was really hunted down by Georges Moréas(Yvan Attal, all curls), an old-fashioned police commissioner, the French director also focuses on his love affair with his lover and accomplice (played by Léa Luce Busato), bringing a healthy dose of fiction to what could have been a rehash of the excellent Faites Entrer l'Accusé episode on the subject.
And the man who was, for a time, public enemy number 1, reminds us in the film: "What are we doing wrong, apart from stealing from bigger thieves than ourselves?" An empathetic, light-hearted biopic, from the heights to the fall of this extraordinary hold-up man in search of freedom.
