The Palais Galliera is a must-see art and culture venue for all fashion and haute couture enthusiasts... But also for lovers of art and Paris. This fashion museum is located in the 16th arrondissement, not far from the Palais de Tokyo, the Musée d'Art Moderne and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. A true artistic district! In this small corner of the capital, the Palais Galliera stands out from the rest with its architecture, collections and thematic exhibitions.
In the 19th century, the Duchesse de Galliera had a palace built on her land in the 16th arrondissement, to house her art collection. Both the palace and the artworks were bequeathed to the City of Paris, which decided in 1977 to transform the site into a fashion and costume museum. Over the decades, the museum has changed and its collections enriched.
Today, the museum houses over 200,000 pieces, dating from the 18th century to the present day. There are costumes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as haute couture pieces, contemporary creations, numerous accessories, photographs, works of graphic art... The museum's permanent collections have been on public display in the palace's cellars since 2018, when the Palais Galliera became the first fashion museum in France to be able to exhibit its permanent collections.
The art venue regularly organizes temporary exhibitions, tours and workshops, and takes part in the city's major cultural events, such as Nuit des Musées, Journées du Patrimoine, Nuit Blanche...
The Palais Galliera is open every day except Monday, January 1, May 1 and December 25. Admission costs between 15 and 13 euros - and zero euros if you're under 18! To complete your visit, you can download the museum'sapp onto your smartphone (IOS or Android), and take advantage of the various itineraries on offer.
The Palais Galliera also houses a checkroom, a bookshop-boutique, an educational workshop and a seasonal outdoor tea room. To get to the museum, take line 9 (Iéna or Alma-Marceau stop) or the RER C (Pont de l'Alma stop). So, when's your next visit?
