Repeated motifs, bright colors, cultural icons, codes from comic books or video games: the pop art movement has been widely known, appreciated and imitated around the world for over 60 years. The Fondation Louis Vuitton takes us back to the origins of pop art, with a sensational new exhibition.
From October 16, 2024 to March 3, 2025, discover Pop Forever, Tom Wesselmann &..., an exhibition dedicated to one of the most important artistic movements since the 1960s. The Fondation Louis Vuitton has assembled 150 paintings, installations and other works, including numerous creations by artist Tom Wesselmann, considered one of the founding members of Pop Art.
He is joined by the unforgettable Andy Warhol, as well as Jeff Koons, Marcel Duchamp, Derrick Adams, Jasper Johns, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Lauren Halsey, Marjorie Strider, Marisol, Kurt Schwitters... All the richness of pop art is represented. The exhibition even extends the tour, presenting 70 works by international artists of different generations and movements. From Dadaism to today's art scene, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has chosen to evoke pop art from its earliest artistic roots to its enduring influence today.
Advertising, painting, cinema, comics, fashion, the press, even household robots: on both sides of the Atlantic, pop art has rapidly invaded all fields. This movement, which gives pride of place to a popular culture once considered unsophisticated, has forcefully imposed its codes and references.
Consumer society, new mass industries, globalization, advertising and modern culture: by embracing all the innovations and fashions of its time, pop art became an often critical and uncompromising reflection of the post-war period.
This exhibition pays homage to Tom Wesselmann, a major American painter. Heir to the abstract artists and attracted by the visual modernity of the 1950s, Tom Wesselmann invented his own universe, blending classical practices with his creations of a new genre. The exhibition features his best-known installations and series, the artists his work has inspired, and sketches of his paintings.
A journey to the heart of pop awaits you at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, with 11 galleries to discover!
